Phlebotomy Class Begins at Tennessee Technology Center Pulaski
No one likes to go to the doctor’s office! But everyone has to go to the doctor or the hospital at some point in their life. Inevitably, lab work will be ordered and you must sit there dreading that “stick”. Well, the Tennessee Technology Center is proud to announce that we have started a new program on our campus for those that would like to become a phlebotomist. Vicki Barnette, RN, Practical Nursing director at TTCP stated that for the past several years there had been inquiries regarding this training. The closest one was approximately 50 miles away and they had a waiting list. We felt that there was a need and we knew we could provide the service to Giles and surrounding counties in an affordable manner.
Class began August 1stwith 14 eager and slightly anxious individuals enrolled. Amy Perry, R.N. and Phlebotomist is the instructor for the program. “Amy is so full of enthusiasm and excitement that the students can’t help but want to learn. We are very fortunate to have her as one of our faculty”, stated Barnette. After the first few weeks, students will begin their clinical rotations to perfect their skills. This is scheduled at area healthcare facilities. In addition, each student will have the opportunity to do live sticks in the lab as well as on the simulators at TTCP.
It is our goal to prepare these students to enter the workforce after adequate instruction and supervised skill experience. The program can be accomplished in less than a quarter. Each entering student must have a clean background check and negative drug screen. These requirements are similar to any other student entering a health career track. Specific immunizations must be taken or proof of previous vaccinations must be provided.
Upon successful completion of the program, the student can write the National Certification exam to become certified. Anyone interested in applying for the phlebotomy program can call 424-4014 or visit us weekdays from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
