Dual Enrollment Program

In May of 2007 House Bill 99 was passed and authorized LEAs to work with local postsecondary institutions to establish dual credit programs that would allow students to earn both secondary and postsecondary credit while in high school at no cost to the student. The intended vision of House Bill 99 is to focus in on students that may be at risk, students whom are kinesthetic learners (hands on oriented), or students who have determined a technical path for their career. The Dual Enrollment Program was created through the partnership of Tennessee Technology Center and the area Boards of Education in hopes of providing students an opportunity to get a head start on their career goals. It also provides students wiht the ability to obtain certifications that can be applied to diplomas in that field and/or used to obtain entry level positions in the area of study they choose.

The program is designed for juniors and seniors interested in pursuing a career in the fields of studies offered at the Tennessee Technology Center. The program; however, has proven to be a key to those students who may be more apt to learn in a hands on atmosphere. Students who want to be one step ahead of the game are perfect candidates for this program. Also, students who have not determined their desired road of mastery have the opportunity to take a semester of a particular type of trade to determine if that may the way for them. The program can be an exploratory option or it can be the bridge that the student needs to jumpstart an already determined career path. A Dual Enrollment Application must be completed by the student and parent for each term of attendance.

It is funded by the Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant Program. Funds are generated from the state lottery and awarded to students participating in the dual enrollment programs offering credit toward high school graduation and college courses. Funds are used to cover any tuition/fees associated with enrollment. All materials for the program are covered through the grant. This includes necessary safety equipment and other materials needed in specific course instruction. Students have the opportunity to participate in field trips and visit local industry leaders to see the real operation procedures. With the relationship between Tennessee Technology Center at Pulaski and local industry; meaningful internship involvment and eventual employment is the goal for each student.

The intent of the program is to allow secondary students the opportunity to earn credit toward a high school diploma as well as a Tennessee Technology Center-Pulaski certificate or diploma and; therefore, have a head start in developing technical skills which can lead to a lifetime career in a chosen occupational field. The Dual Enrollment program is an opportunity for students to experience what is expected of them in a college setting and to raise the standard of their performance.

Students are given the opportunity to work on real projects in their field of study. Students are also instructed on proper interviewing skills, filling out an application and how to best utilize the local Career Center. Tennessee Technology Center partners with many local industry professionals to offer internships in each program area to provide the best possible training opportunities to the students. Many students obtain part-time jobs during their dual enrollment program and are offered those same positions upon graduation.
